Stout Canyon – Colfax County – Update 9/7  

Date/ Time/ Situation: The Stout Canyon fire is located approximately 10 miles west of Hwy 64, near the old Dawson Cemetery in Colfax County. The lightning-caused fire was reported on Tuesday, September 5 at 6:30 p.m. and is burning in a mixed conifer and pinon/juniper area. Currently the fire has burned 120 acres and is zero percent contained.

This morning saw no active growth on the fire from yesterday. Today, air support provided retardant drops on the fire’s north end, while crews approached on foot to start forming containment lines. Tomorrow’s activity will include working dozers and crews on the east and west sides of the fire. Due to the remoteness of the area, crews can only access by foot.  

Resources: A total of 80 personnel are responding. This includes 2 engines, 2 dozers, 2 helicopters, 2 air tankers, 2 water tenders and 3 hand crews.  

Weather: Tomorrow’s weather expects to be sunny, with a high near 91. Winds from the north at 5-15 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Tomorrow night should be mostly clear, with a low around 51. Southeast wind 5-15 mph becoming northwest after midnight. 

Evacuations / Closures: There are no evacuations or closures in effect.
