Prescribed Pile Burn in Aztec Springs area to begin as soon as January 21

Ignitions are planned to begin on the prescribed pile burn in the Aztec Springs area on January 21st and 22nd. This burn is located east of Santa Fe and north of the Randall Davey Audubon center on Nature Conservancy property.

The Forest Stewards Guild and The Nature Conservancy will utilize snowpack conditions to conduct this prescribed pile burn on up to 120 acres in the Aztec Springs Drainage.

The area has good snow coverage from last week’s storms and predicted incoming storms will assist crews with patrol and mop up in the area.

Expect to see smoke in the area while burning is occurring. Winds and ventilation should carry smoke away from town, but smoke may settle into lower elevations and drainages overnight and should lift by mid-morning. Lingering smoke may be present in the days after ignitions are complete.

This burn will remove hazardous fuels adjacent to communities and lower wildfire risk in summer months.

This burn may continue throughout the winter as conditions allow.
