Highlights: Crews continue to prep and improve defensible space around cultural structures. Rain, heavy in some areas, was received over the eastern portion of the fire footprint yesterday. Planning and preparation continues for potential future firing operations in the coming days, which will result in an increase of smoke production in the area.

Fire Activity: Recent rain —up to an inch in some areas— helped reduce fire activity across the eastern portion of the fire yesterday. Due to the heavy rain, some crews temporarily moved off the fire line and onto more secure paved roads in case of localized flooding.

Crews focused on clearing and prepping access roads, strengthening containment lines, and checking for hotspots along the fire’s edge. On the north side, firefighters made good headway improving Forest Service Road 474 through grading and will continue that work today. To the east, firefighters began chipping on the Rio Gallina Ranch with plans to continue during today’s operational period. On the southern end, crews continued repairing and reinforcing fences on property affected by the fire.

With similar temperatures and humidity to yesterday, today we expect light smoldering or creeping fire in the northern portion of the fire. Crews will continue building up containment lines along roads to the north and will patrol the Rio Gallina drainage to find opportunities to hold the fire in place, while also preparing for potential future firing operations. Structure protection remains a priority, with ongoing work at Gallina Ranch and new efforts beginning at the Monastery and Peña homestead.

Weather and Smoke: An unstable airmass with rich moisture will remain in over the northern mountains of New Mexico, bringing another round of scattered storms in the vicinity of the fire. Storms will move more from west to east today which will put the fire itself generally out of the path of significant precipitation. Smoke from the Laguna Fire and fires in the surrounding areas, including Colorado, will likely be visible in the surrounding areas for many days. Please use caution when driving in the area. Smoke outlook information is available at outlooks.airfire.org/outlook and air quality information for your area can be found at www.airnow.gov.

Closures, Flight Restrictions and Evacuations: A closure order is in place for USFS lands in the area.
