Tusas Fire – Update – 4/25/2026

Acres: 233

Start Date: April 22, 2026

Location: Las Tusas, NM

Fuels: Timber

Containment: 39%

Highlights: Yesterday, fire crews made good progress completing handline around the perimeter of the Tusas Fire, helping to raise containment to 39%. Road closures and Ready, Set, Go statuses have been lifted but the public should proceed with caution, as firefighting operations continue on NM 266 and the surrounding area.

Operations: Today, fire crews will focus their efforts on mop-up, which means extinguishing or removing burning material near firelines. Hot spots are still active within the interior, and smoke may be visible.

Resources will evaluate suppression repair needs, which may include fixing fences, bulldozer lines, and minimizing impacts from firefighting activities. A structure protection group continues to provide initial attack capacity for any new fire starts within the area.

Safety: The primary objective for the Tusas Fire is firefighter and public safety. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place to keep the area clear for responding aircraft. No drones or aircraft will be allowed to fly in the area. Flying will force air resources to be grounded immediately. If you fly, they can’t.

Weather: Increasing clouds, with a high near 69. Winds from the west at 15-20 mph. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the area; winds will increase, with gusts up to 35 mph. Humidity could reach as low as 10-15%.

Smoke: Smoke impacts have diminished. View an interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/. Learn more about smoke impacts at nmtracking.doh.nm.gov/environment/air/fireandsmoke.html. Please use caution when driving in the area.

Closures: Road closures and Ready, Set, Go statuses have been lifted for the area. Although the closure is lifted, proceed with caution, as firefighting operations continue on NM 266 and the surrounding area.
