Tusas Fire – Final Update – Sunday, April 26, 2026

Acres: 233

Start Date: April 22, 2026

Location: Las Tusas, NM

Fuels: Timber

Containment: 79%

Highlights: This will be the last daily update for the Tusas Fire unless fire behavior changes significantly.

Yesterday, crews focused on securing and patrolling containment lines and on mopping up along the fire perimeter. Despite strong winds, the fire remained within the established lines. Crews also began suppression repair work, including repairing bulldozer lines along the northern perimeter.

Road closures and Ready, Set, Go statuses remain lifted, but the public should proceed with caution, as firefighting operations continue on NM 266 and the surrounding area.

Operations: Today, fire crews will continue patrolling and securing the fireline by extinguishing or removing burning material. Smoke impacts to the area have diminished, although smoke may still be visible in the interior. Suppression repair activities continue along the northern edge of the fire, where bulldozer and handline will be restored. Some resources have been released from the fire to assist with other wildfires burning in the state.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, command of the fire will transition back to the local unit.

Safety: The primary objective for the Tusas Fire is firefighter and public safety. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place to keep the area clear for responding aircraft. No drones or aircraft will be allowed to fly in the area. Flying will force air resources to be grounded immediately. If you fly, they can’t.

Weather: Today, high of 68 degrees. Partly cloudy with a chance of sprinkles in the afternoon. A Red Flag warning is in effect and will bring strong southwest to west winds gusting up to 45mph.

Smoke: Smoke impacts have diminished. View an interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/. Learn more about smoke impacts at nmtracking.doh.nm.gov/environment/air/fireandsmoke.html.

Closures: Road closures and Ready, Set, Go statuses have been lifted for the area. Although the closure is lifted, proceed with caution, as firefighting operations continue on NM 266 and the surrounding area.
