Six Mile Fire Crews Hoping to Anchor In Today

Six Mile Fire Morning Update – Magdalena Ranger District

Albuquerque, NM – May 10, 2026 — Firefighters will continue to actively suppress the Six Mile Fire using both a direct extinguishment as well as an indirect confinement strategy.  Helicopters and Very Large Airtankers (VLAs) will continue to be utilized today for crews to safely engage the Six Mile Fire. 

Cause: Undetermined                                      Size: Estimated 150 Acres

Reported start date / time:    March 8, 2026, around 4pm

Location: Mountainous terrain of Magdalena Mountains on the Magdalena Ranger District on the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands.

Resources: 3 Interagency Hotshot Crews, 2 Fire Modules, Air Attack, 2 Type 3 Helicopters, 2 Type 1 Helicopter and several Large Air tankers. 

Fire Behavior: The Six Mile Fire exhibited moderate fire behavior yesterday with the northwest corner becoming more active later in the afternoon.  Cooler temperatures slowed fire growth overnight.

Values at risk: The Six Mile Fire is not a threat to any communities, and there are no evacuations in effectThere are several trails in the area of the Six Mile Fire.  The Langmuir Observatory, which is in the vicinity, is not currently threatened but remains at risk.

Fuels: Conifer,Oak and Pinyon/Juniper

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. The public is encouraged to avoid the surrounding area so that first responders can continue their efforts. Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting and can cause air operations to cease. The public is reminded that “If you fly, we can’t!”

Smoke may be visible along Highway 60 from Socorro west as well as from Interstate 25.  Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
