Type 3 Team Arriving to Take Command of the Seven Cabins Fire

Daily Update: June 8, 2026

Acres: 31860                                                                               Start Date: May 14, 2026

Location: Capitan Mountain Wilderness                                    Cause: Human caused

Personnel: 385 personnel

Fuels: Heavy dead fuels in the Peppin Burn Scar

Containment: 90% contained

Highlights: Following the successful burnout operation last week that brought the fire edge to favorable ground, Sunday’s hot, dry and windy weather provided a perfect test. Despite the weather favorable to fire growth, aerial and ground observation revealed almost no fire activity.

Operations: As containment grows and fire activity decreases, more personnel and equipment are demobilizing to rest and prepare for future use. Tuesday will be the final day that this incident management team will be in command of the fire. A Northern New Mexico Type 3 team is arriving today and preparing to take command Wednesday. During the transition, crews will continue their work on containing the fire and Initial Attack teams will remain ready to respond to new starts. One member of many incident management teams is a Fire Behavior Analyst (FBAN). They forecast what a wildfire is likely to do in the near future. They consider three things: weather, terrain and fuels; these are each contributing factors to the spread of a fire. Although the importance of each against the others can ebb and flow, none of them ever becomes unimportant. Fire can move downhill. Fire can move against the wind. Fire can burn areas where fuel was thought too sparse to burn. It is only when the triad of weather, terrain and fuels are considered together that fire behavior can begin to be understood.

Weather: Today will be sunny and hot. West winds will be 15-20 mph, turning southerly in the afternoon. Tuesday afternoon may bring thunderstorms to the area.

Smoke: With limited smoldering within the fire’s perimeter, no meaningful impacts to air quality are expected outside the immediate area of the fire. All sites will have good air quality. For air quality information, please check local conditions at Fire.AirNow.gov.

Closures and Warnings: A forest closure is in effect across the Capitan Mountain area, extending east and south of Highway 246 to the Forest Service boundary and continuing south to Forest Service Road 57. Baca campground is included in the closure. Stage 1 fire restrictions also remain in effect. The State of New Mexico has issued fire restrictions for all non-federal, non-tribal, non-municipal areas. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire to ensure safe access for firefighting aircraft. If a drone enters the restricted airspace, all firefighting aircraft must be grounded to ensure safety. Remember “If You Fly, We Can’t.”

Safety: Despite recent rains, the southwest remains in serious drought conditions. By following guidelines to keep your property safe, you help protect lives and property of your neighbors as well as your own. For information on the Firewise program, visit https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/wildfire/firewise-usa. Crews, heavy equipment, and machinery remain active in and around the incident. The safety of firefighters and the public is our highest priority, and we ask everyone to stay aware of ongoing operations. Fire personnel continue working along area road systems, and increased caution from the public helps keep both firefighters and community members safe.
