Multiple fires contained using a full suppression strategy
Santa Fe, NM, June 18, 2026 — Recent thunderstorms and increased fire danger brought multiple fire starts on the Santa Fe National Forest.
The Rio Fire, located in the Espanola Ranger District, continues to burn in brush, heavy dead-and-down fuels. The fire is 0% contained and last reported at 128 acres. The Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team will be taking command of the fire. Daily updates will be provided.
The following wildfires are fully contained, or no further updates will be provided unless fire behavior changes significantly:
The Paliza Fire, located on Forest Road 10 adjacent to Paliza Campground in the Jemez Ranger District started the evening of June 17, 2026. Firefighters were able to stop forward progression of the fire, keeping the fire size at one acre. The fire is reported to be human caused and a fire investigator is enroute. Crews expect to contain the fire by this evening. Campground reservations have been cancelled, and the public is encouraged to check recreation.gov for updates.
The Tank Fire started on June 17, 2026, when a vehicle caught fire on the southbound lane of US 550 and spread to the surrounding vegetation. Located in the Cuba Ranger District, off the southbound lane of US 550 on Little Chulita Rd on the northwest corner of Cuba Mesa, the fire originated on BLM lands and burned into the Santa Fe National Forest. The fire is 4.6 acres burning in grass, brush, and timber and the fire is currently 70% contained. The fire is human caused. Crews continue to mop-up and secure the fire
The Pelada Fire, located in the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District outside of Santa Fe, is fully contained; the fire remains at 4.9 acres and crews continue mop-up operations. Cause is lightning.
The Cebolla 2 Fire, located on the Jemez Ranger District 1.5 miles east of the Valle San Antonio, has been fully contained and is 0.5 acres in size.
The Oso Fire, located in the Espanola Ranger District, has been fully contained. The fire was burning in a single snag and remains one tenth of an acre.
The Krause Fire, located in the Cuba Ranger District, was fully contained the evening of June 17, 2026. Final size was 0.8 acres which was reduced from the initial 2–3-acre report after firefighters used GPS to accurately map the fire.
The Gallina Fire, located in the Cuba Ranger District, is fully contained and has been controlled. Firefighters continue to monitor the fire for heat, mop up areas of concern and work to declare the fire dead-out.
