Canyon Venado Fire – Torrance County – Update 6/25

Update: Yesterday, crews made good progress constructing fire line around the entire perimeter. Today, lines continue to hold, although the fire remains active near infrastructure to the east and wind turbines within the perimeter. Some interior heat is torching and smoking within unburnt islands. Crews will continue to maintain and improve line, watch for sparks from the interior, and mop up. 

The Canyon Venado Fire was discovered at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23 south of I-40 east of Clines Corners. Currently, the fire is estimated to be 908 acres and is 0% contained. 
 
Evacuations: None at this time. 

Closures: I-40 eastbound has been reopened. 

Weather: Currently 70 degrees, 46% RH, west winds 13 mph. Today, scattered showers and thunderstorms possible; mostly sunny, with a high near 84; west wind 10-15 mph becoming 20-25 mph in the afternoon. Tonight, isolated showers and thunderstorms possible; low around 55; west wind 15-20 mph decreasing after midnight.
