Increased winds this afternoon led to more active fire behavior, particularly along the northeastern portion of the fire. This activity produced a visible smoke column visible from surrounding communities. While the increase in smoke may be concerning, firefighters continue to monitor conditions closely and implement strategies to limit the spread of the fire.
Today, crews used heavy equipment to construct and strengthen both direct and indirect fire lines from Little Tusas Creek eastward toward the southwestern edge of the fire. Aerial resources remained active throughout the day, using water from Hopewell Lake to conduct bucket drops along the southeastern perimeter, cooling hotspots and reinforcing containment lines. An additional dozer line was constructed on the northwest side of the fire, connecting two existing roads. Firefighters also continued scouting the remaining perimeter, identifying opportunities to use existing roads, natural barriers and terrain features as potential containment lines.
Winds have moderated over the past several hours, creating more favorable conditions for nighttime operations. If conditions remain favorable and crews may conduct operations safely, firefighters may implement strategic firing operations along the southern perimeter tonight. These operations are designed to remove unburned vegetation between the fire’s edge and Road 167A, reducing the amount of available fuel and strengthening containment lines ahead of future fire activity.
Public and firefighter safety remain the highest priorities. Residents and visitors may continue to see smoke and occasional increases in fire activity as crews work to secure the fire perimeter.
