Highlights: Firefighters made additional progress on the Beehive Fire yesterday as lighter winds, cooler temperatures and scattered precipitation supported moderate fire behavior and reduced smoke impacts in nearby communities. Drones equipped with infrared technology helped identify remaining heat within and around the fire perimeter, with the most significant heat located along the southeast flank. Crews continued monitoring and addressing hotspots to limit the potential for additional fire growth. The Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management also supported initial attack efforts in the area. Resources quickly contained and extinguished the small Bees Nest Fire near the Beehive Fire before it could spread. Initial attack crews will remain ready to respond to any new incidents while continuing to support ongoing operations on the Beehive Fire. A road closure for the Beehive Fire is scheduled to go into effect tomorrow, July 2, 2026.
Operations: Today, firefighters identified an unburned pocket of fuel near Forest Service Road 80 (FS80) on the northwest edge of the fire. If conditions remain favorable, crews plan to use Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), or drones, to conduct firing operations to strengthen and secure containment lines in that area. UAS technology is also being used to map the fire’s eastern flank, where steep terrain and limited access have made ground operations more challenging and where fire activity has been most concentrated. On the northwest and northern perimeter, crews continue to improve and secure existing fire lines while installing hose lays eastward from FS80. Along the southern perimeter, firefighters are constructing and strengthening direct fire line from Forest Service Road 167A eastward to reinforce containment efforts on the southeastern edge of the fire.
Smoke: To monitor current smoke conditions, view the interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/. Learn more about protecting yourself from wildfire smoke and its health impacts at https://nmtracking.org/environment/air/FireAndSmoke.html.
Weather: Poor overnight humidity recovery is expected to continue into Tuesday morning. A slight increase in moisture may bring a chance of showers developing from higher cloud bases and dry thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, but little rainfall is expected. These storms could produce sudden, gusty winds of up to 50 mph near the fire area. Southwest winds will remain steady, with gusts up to 25 mph. Dry, warm and breezy conditions are expected to return on Wednesday, which could support increased fire activity.
Safety: For your safety, visitors should be aware of ongoing fire suppression activities in the Hopewell Lake area, where crews are using heavy equipment and aircraft to support firefighting operations. Hikers on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail are encouraged to bypass the section between Hopewell Lake and the Rio Grande National Forest until fire activity and suppression operations have subsided. Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution on Highways 64 and 285, where periods of heavy smoke may reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.
Fire Restrictions & Closures: A Beehive Fire road closure is scheduled to go in effective tomorrow, July 2, 2026. The closure includes Forest Service Roads 83, 421, 576 and 133, from Highway 64 to its intersection with Forest Service Road 133E1. The Carson National Forest is currently in Stage 2 fire restrictions. You can find more information at: https://bit.ly/CarsonNF-Fire-Restrictions. Fireworks are ILLEGAL on National Forest Land. Violating this regulation poses a great risk for wildland fire potential and public safety.
