Operational Update: Yesterday, some areas of the fire received ¼” to ½” rainfall based on radar estimates. Rainfall coupled with elevated relative humidity levels helped moderate fire activity and provided opportunities for firefighters to use a direct extinguishment strategy on portions of the fire. The surrounding communities of Nambé, Santa Fe, and Valle Vista are expected to experience moderate air quality this morning. Española, Mora, and Taos are expected to have good air quality. For current air-quality information in your community, visit fire.airnow.gov.

During the last 24-hour operational period, firefighters constructed containment line east toward Rito Gallina along the northern side of the fire, south of Rio Medio. Forest Road 306 was improved by reducing fuel along its southern side, creating a strong contingency line extending eastward from Forest Road 503, north of Rio Medio. Crews incorporated natural terrain features to maximize the line’s effectiveness. The containment line held strong on the western side when it was tested by the outflow winds from recent storms to protect the communities of Cundiyo and Cerro Pinion.

Today, firefighters will continue securing and mopping up the containment lines and continue developing comprehensive plans to protect surrounding communities. Contingency lines southeast of Truchas will continue to be constructed, and strategic terrain features will be evaluated for potential opportunities to stop the fire’s spread if it reaches that point. On the southwestern side of the fire, crews will access the fire’s edge and continue increasing containment south of Rio Frijoles toward Cañon Chimayó.

Weather: Today will be partly cloudy, there is a 60% chance of rain with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will be between 84℉ and 88℉, with relative humidity between 20% to 30%. Winds will be from the west southwest at 5 to 10 mph.

Evacuations:  In Santa Fe County, Camino de Cañon in Cundiyo remains in “Go” status. The rest of Cundiyo, Cerro Piñon, and the Borrego Mesa area—specifically near Forest Roads 440 and 306—remain in “Set” status. Nambe Pueblo Lake remains in “Ready” status.

In Rio Arriba County, the community of Cordova remains in “Ready” status.
