Latest Update: Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 4 assumed command of the Frijoles Fire today at 7 a.m. The team will build on the progress and successful suppression efforts of California Interagency Incident Management Team 8 and firefighters assigned to the incident, maintaining a full suppression strategy focused on safely containing the fire and protecting nearby communities and other values at risk.

Ongoing & Planned Operations: Firefighters made good progress across the Frijoles Fire yesterday. On the southwest portion of the fire, firefighters supported ongoing suppression efforts, patrolling the perimeter and monitoring isolated areas of heat. Crews along the southern portion made progress securing the ridge above the Frijoles Creek drainage, while firefighters on the northern/eastern portions secured containment lines and addressed isolated areas of heat within the perimeter. Aerial resources also responded to reported smoke within the interior of the fire area; no threats to containment lines were identified.

Today, firefighters on the northwest portion of the fire will focus on mopping up hot spots and securing containment lines. Resources will also construct fireline east from the Gorman Scout Trail toward the Canada Vaca Trail while crews working from the Pecos Wilderness boundary focus efforts to the west along the northern flank and south toward Frijoles Canyon. On the southern portion of the fire, crews continue to strengthen and secure fireline along Frijoles Creek.

Residents in the community of Truchas should continue to expect to see incident personnel in the area, assessing and prepping infrastructure. Additionally, aircraft remains available to support firefighters on the ground as needed and when safe to do so.

Air Quality & Smoke: Taos can expect good air quality today unless the Mogote Ridge Fire, about 40 miles west of town located in the Carson National Forest, becomes more active. Española and Nambé may experience light smoke this morning, but conditions should improve by about 10 a.m., with good air quality expected for the rest of the day. Mora and Santa Fe should also have overall good air quality until sunset, while Valley Vista may remain hazy despite good air quality; meaning that haze or light smoke may be noticeable but poses little or no health risk. Tonight, smoke may return to Española and settle into the valleys around Nambé, Santa Fe, and Mora. Santa Fe’s smoke should last only a few hours, with clear conditions expected tomorrow. Weather: High pressure will begin building over the fire area today, reducing the potential for thunderstorms and bringing warmer, drier conditions. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s, with relative humidity in the high teens to low 20s.

Evacuations & Closures: In Santa Fe County, all of Cundiyo, Cerro Piñon, and the Borrego Mesa area (near Forest Roads 440 and 306) are in “Set” status. Nambe Pueblo Lake remains in “Ready” status. For more information, visit https://www.santafecountynm.gov/fire.

A road closure is in effect for NM 503 between County Road 98 and State Road 76. Visitors are encouraged to avoid the fire area and use caution when traveling near firefighting operations. A temporary forest area closure is also in effect on the Santa Fe National Forest, including the Pecos Wilderness area in the Espanola Ranger District. Additionally, there is a Temporary Road Closure Order affecting FR 306, from the intersection of FR 440 and FR 306, West to the Forest Boundary and FR 306.
