Latest Update: Crews see increased containment to 77% on the Frijoles Fire as repair operations continue along the northeastern flanks.
Daily updates will continue every other day throughout the duration of the incident unless significant events warrant.
Ongoing & Planned Operations: Mitigation and repair operations continue with heavy equipment along the northeastern flank of the Frijoles Fire. Patrols continue in several areas with infrared flights scheduled for today to evaluate for areas of heat and activity. Steep, rugged terrain and limited access remain key factors in how firefighters safely engage this portion of the fire.
On September 3, 2026, a lightning caused wildfire was reported near Mitchell Trail on the Santa Fe National Forest. Crews assisted local resources with initial attack efforts. Rainfall was significant in the area and reports indicate the fire is currently at approximately 2 acres in steep, rugged terrain and resources will remain on scene in support of continued suppression efforts.
Air Quality & Smoke: Smoke will be less noticeable today due to decreasing fire activity as cloud cover and above normal monsoon moisture move in. Smoke impacts will be confined to the immediate vicinity of the fires. Nambe and Mora will have good air quality and periods of moderate from sources of smoke other than the Frijoles Fire. Espanola and Santa Fe will have good air quality all day. Los Alamos will also have good air quality with the expected zero growth of the Mitchell Fire. Weather: Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 3pm today. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Northeast wind5 to 10mph becoming west in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Evacuations & Closures: No evacuations are in place in Santa Fe or Rio Arriba counties for the Frijoles Fire. Residents should remain prepared and continue monitoring official updates, as the fire remains active and conditions may change.
A temporary forest area closure remains in effect on the Santa Fe National Forest, including the Pecos Wilderness area in the Espanola Ranger District. Additionally, there is a Temporary Road Closure Order affecting FR 306, from the intersection of FR 440 and FR 306, west to the Forest Boundary and FR 306.
