Fire crews on the Jemez Ranger District conducted a successful test fire this morning on the planned 412‑acre Paliza Prescribed Fire project. The test fire showed good fuel consumption, with smoke rising roughly 1,000 feet above ground level and drifting to the southeast. With these favorable conditions confirmed, crews will continue with ignitions throughout the day.
The Paliza project is designed to reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health within the designated boundary. Smoke will be visible and may be noticeable in nearby communities, and drivers may see smoke along and around Jemez Springs, Ponderosa, Pueblo of Jemez, Zia Pueblo, San Ysidro, and along U.S. Highway 550. Please do not report smoke from this planned operation.
