Carson National Forest Evening Fire Updates

CARSON NATIONAL FOREST WILDFIRES EVENING UPDATE

Independence Wildfire
Acres: 22 Containment: 20%
Cause: Lightning Start Date: July 4, 2016
Location: N of Lama Foundation, NM Vegetation: Oak Brush and Douglas Fir
The Independence Fire is currently at 22 acres due to more accurate mapping. A line has been completed around the perimeter of the fire and all lines are holding. The fire is located between the Lama Foundation and the Columbine/Hondo Wilderness Area.

Resources working on the fire will continue to include two engines, district fire personnel, and a Farmington BLM Type 2 crew. The Carson Hotshots and one engine will be released this evening and a Type 2 IA crew from Santa Fe, and the Red River Chasers will arrive tomorrow morning. The helicopter will continue to be available if needed. A possible critical weather watch has been forecasted by the National Weather Service for windy conditions this weekend. Smoke will continue to be visible from Lama and Questa.

La Cañada Wildfire
Acres: 55 Containment: 75%
Cause: Under Investigation Start Date: July 6, 2016
Location: 4 miles NE of El Rito, NM Vegetation: Grass, Brush and Ponderosa Pine

The La Cañada Fire, is located in the Vallecitos Federal Sustained Yield Unit, green fuel wood area. The fire perimeter was lined on Wednesday and all lines have held. Fire personnel will continue working to secure the line to a greater depth. Fuels in the interior continue to burn and will produce visible smoke for the next few days. Smoke will be visible from El Rito, Vallecitos, and surrounding communities.
