Final Updates on Bonita and Whitman Fires

As of July 4th, the Bonita Fire on the El Rito Ranger District of the Carson National Forest is 100% contained and remains at 7,495 acres.  Two engines continue to patrol and monitor the fire area, and conduct repair work on firelines.

As of July 5th all roads in the Bonita Fire area are open, however, the public is asked to only travel around the fire if absolutely necessary and be alert for fire vehicle traffic.  For safety reasons, the public is advised to avoid the interior burn area where there are many hazards.

As of July 4th, the Whitman Fire on the Questa Ranger District is 100% contained and 343 acres.  One engine remains on scene to patrol and make sure firelines are secure.

It may be possible to see smoke coming from both fires over the coming weeks as interior pockets of vegetation continue to burn.

Current fire information on the forest can be found under News and Events on the Carson National Forest website and on the Carson National Forest Facebook page at
