North Crest Fire – Cibola National Forest – 7/7/17 11:00 a.m

Albuquerque, NM, July 7, 2017 – Crews worked until late yesterday evening constructing containment lines on the north and south edges of the North Crest Fire.  They also removed numerous dead standing trees, also known as snags that were posing a threat to firefighters.  Fire behavior moderated somewhat yesterday afternoon.  More accurate mapping last night indicated that the North Crest Fire is 5 acres in size.

Several spot fires were active on the west side of the Sandia Crest last night and into this morning.  Crews were successful at squelching all but two of them.  Helicopter water drops will be used to suppress the remaining two spot fires this morning.  Smoke will be visible throughout today as the fire continues to grow and move toward the defined containment lines.

A Type 3 Incident Management Team will arrive on scene today and assume responsibility of the North Crest Fire tonight at 6:00 PM.

The Crest Highway is closed at the 10K Trail Head and only emergency vehicles are allowed beyond that point.  All of the trailheads and backcountry trails along the North Crest Highway are closed.  The La Luz Trail remains open to the point where it intersects with the Crest Trail.  The Piedra Lisa South Trail also remains open.  All trails east of the Piedra Lisa Trail are closed.

The Fire Information phone lines that were set up yesterday, 505-346-3823 and 505-346-3870, will become inactive at noon today.  The new phone number for North Crest Fire Information, beginning at noon today, will be 505-750-7524.  Additional updates will be sent as new information is reported.
