WILDFIRE UPDATE: 246 Fire & 206 Fire – Southeast NM – 04/14/18 – 12:30 PM

246 Fire: Evacuations and road closures for this fire in Capitan were lifted this morning (04/14).  A community meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. this Sunday (04/15) at the Capitan Volunteer Fire Department.  This fire is burning east of Highway 246 in Capitan. It’s currently estimated at 3,360 acres.  Two (2) residences and four outbuildings have been lost.  The fire started at approximately 5:00 p.m. Thursday (04/12). It’s currently burning on private, state and US Forest Service land.  Fuels include grass and heavy pinon juniper.  A Type 3 Incident Management Team has assumed command of the Fire.  More than 145 personnel are fighting this fire.

206 Fire:  New mapping now estimates this fire at 39,688 acres in both New Mexico and Texas.  Approximately 35,274 acres is in New Mexico and an estimated 4,413 acres is in Texas.  Containment in New Mexico is currently 90% and 75% in Texas.  The fire started off of Highway 206 between Tatum and Milnesand, NM around 2:30 p.m. Thursday (04/12).  Residents from at least a dozen homes on Bledsoe Road in New Mexico who were evacuated have been allowed to return home.  One home and one outbuilding were lost to the fire in Texas.  The fire is burning on private and state land.  This will be the last notification for this fire unless there are significant changes.
