Gila National Forest – Area 74 Prescribed Burn Update

The Area 74 Rx Burn continues successful operations. The predicted weather for Wednesday, May 9, includes west winds from 8-13 mph, and a possibility of wind gusts up to 25 mph late in the morning. If the winds become gusty, the Agency Administrator and the Burn Boss will make a decision if there is a need to hold operations and monitor. Updates will continue on a daily basis.

Smoke will be visible in the burn area and may drift into Truth or Consequences and Kingston, NM. Smoke will settle in drainages and washes in the late evening and very early morning.

This morning, the temperature in Poverty Creek, NM was 39 degrees and heavy smoke had settled in the community. The smoke dissipated as temperatures rose and the sun heated up the air.
