7/14/18- Lobo Fire- Carson National Forest

Taos, NM (July 14, 2018) – For Immediate Release.  The Lobo fire was discovered on July 14 and is located approximately 2 miles east of San Cristobal on the Questa Ranger District in the Columbine Hondo Wilderness. This lightning caused fire is currently 1/4 acre burning in mixed conifer, aspen, and sub-alpine fir.  Fire managers will monitor the fire closely over the next several days due to the steep and inaccessible terrain.  Weather forecasts are predicting more rain in the week ahead so growth potential is expected to be minimal.

Smoke may be visible over the next few day from Highway 522, Highway 64, Questa, San Cristobal, Lama, and surrounding communities.  Information on air quality and protecting your health using the 5-3-1 visibility method can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website https://nmtracking.org/fire.

The Carson National Forest is in Stage 2 Fire Restrictions.  Fire Danger is still rated as VERY HIGH.  For more information on fire restrictions visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/Carson and https://firerestrictions.us/nm/.

In addition to fire restrictions, the area around the Sardinas Canyon Fire will remain closed due to ongoing fire activities and for public safety. Forest Road 76, off Hwy 518, will be closed, including the La Junta Summer homes and the Duran and Upper La Junta campgrounds. Forest Road 442 at Gallegos Park is closed.  Forest officials will continually evaluate when these roads can be re-opened for public use after the monsoons.

Fire updates are posted on the New Mexico Fire Information website at https://nmfireinfo.com/, http://www.twitter/CarsonNF and http://www.facebook.com/CarsonNF.
