Mariposa fire final update

Mariposa Fire Update for Mt. Taylor Ranger District

Grants, NM; August 6, 2018 – For Immediate Release:

  • Sunday the 5th significant rain fell on the fire.
  • Fire size remains at 895 acres.
  • 50% contained
  • Started by lightning on Sunday 7/29 on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District, Cibola National Forest.
  • 80 Multi-agency firefighters are on this incident, including NM State Forestry, NM-IWC Inmate Crews, Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia Counties, US Forest Service, BIA, BLM, Zuni, Ramah and Acoma Crews, Cities of Santa Fe, Carlsbad and Albuquerque.

With the rain firefighters made headway on containing the fire on both the south and north sides of the fire and will continue to mop up any hot spots near the fire line. Based on the amount of containment that can be completed today, many of the firefighter will be released so that they can prepare for other incidents. The Pecos Type 3 team will also be transitioning command of the fire back to the Mt. Taylor Ranger District at 6 AM Tuesday.

The Pecos Team would like to thank our Inter-agency partners in assisting and supporting the safe operation during the Mariposa fire. And thanks to the City of Grants for hosting the team.

The following web sites will provide fire information for the Cibola once the Type 3 team is gone. There will not be any addition posts of the Mariposa fire unless there is significant changes.
