Cibola NF & National Grasslands – Magdalena Ranger District – Hop/Patterson Canyon Prescribed Fire begins February 20, 2019

Magdalena, NM, February 19, 2019 – Fire Managers at Cibola National Forest will begin a prescribed fire on the Magdalena Ranger District tomorrow, February 20, 2019. This planned ignition will be conducted under specific conditions to restore the fire dependent ecosystem.  This pile burn will promote forest health in many ways by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients, and increasing habitat diversity.  This treatment will also help protect nearby communities. The prescribed fire will be managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Ignitions will begin mid-morning. Isolated debris piles will be ignited throughout the project area, located approximately two miles east of Magdalena, NM. Smoke will be visible for several days after ignitions have been completed. Up to 50 acres will be treated. The fire area and adjacent roads and trails will be monitored until all hazards are mitigated.

Smoke will be monitored to assess potential health impacts and the Forest Service will coordinate with the New Mexico Environment Department and Department of Health to issue any needed alerts. Smoke sensitive individuals are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found on the New Mexico Department of Health website at https://nmtracking.org/fire
