BLM Prescribed Fire in McKinley and Sandoval Counties in May – Early June

As early as next week and continuing through spring and into early summer, the Bureau of Land Management Rio Puerco Field Office plans to conduct a prescribed fire in McKinley and Sandoval counties, weather permitting.

The approximately 500-acre area, known as Mesa Chivato, is comprised of ponderosa pine, piñon and juniper trees within the Ignacio Chavez and Chamisa Wilderness Study Areas, located west of Highway 550 and 15 miles southwest of San Luis, N.M.  During the days of the burn, prescribed fire signs will be posted along BLM Road 1103.  The smoke may be visible from Highway 550.

The goal of this project is to reduce the density of the forests and woodlands, and hazardous accumulations of vegetation, that under the right conditions could contribute to high intensity wildfire.

Questions about these projects should be directed to the Rio Puerco Field Office at 505-761-8700.  You can also follow implementation of this project on NMFireInfo.com, on Twitter @nmfireinfo or on Facebook.com/nmfireinfo.  #BLMNewMexico
