Fires Detected on the El Rito Ranger District, Carson NF

On October 1st, a series of fires were detected adjacent to Forest Road 559 above the El Rito Campground on the El Rito District of the Carson National Forest. They are being referred to as the Maton Fire, and are located 2-4 miles north of the community of El Rito, NM. The cause of the fires is unknown and is currently under investigation.

Command of the fire has been assigned to a Type 3 organization and fire managers have decided to fully suppress the fire. Crews are engaged and scouting for potential options for containment. There are approximately 45 total personnel assigned and additional resources have been ordered.

Smoke from the Maton Fire may be visible from US 285, US 84, the communities of El Rito, Medenales, Abiquiu and possibly Taos. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
