Eighteen fires discovered Tuesday on the El Rito Ranger District totaling 105 acres are now 85% contained. The cause of the Maton fires is unknown and an investigation is currently taking place. Steady soaking rain received yesterday was significant and helped crews contain the fires.
Transfer of command from the Type 3 Incident Management Team to the local district Type 4 organization occurred at 8:00 am this morning. This will be the final update on the Maton Fire unless significant activity occurs. Managers from the Type 3 Incident Management Team and the El Rito Ranger District would like to thank the community for the support received during this incident.
Smoke from the Maton Fires may be visible from US 285, US 84, the communities of El Rito, Medenales, Abiquiu and possibly Taos. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health by using the 5-3-1 visibility method can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) website at https://nmtracking.org/fire.
