Lincoln National Forest, Sacramento Ranger District- 16 Springs Prescribed Burn

Cloudcroft, NM – 2/4/2020-Fire officials on the Sacramento Ranger District in Cloudcroft, NM, are prescribed burning today in the 16 Springs area near Mayhill, NM. Smoke may be visible from Mayhill and along Hwy 82.  Smoke may linger at night and early morning and maybe seen for several days following ignition.

Prescribed fire

  • Removes dead and excess plants and helps make room for new vegetation
  • Minimizes the spread of insects and disease that can kill trees
  • Improves habitat for threatened and endangered species
  • Recycles nutrients back to the soil
  • Promotes the growth of trees, wildflowers, and other plants.

Winter is often an ideal time to conduct prescribed burns because temperatures are low, and snow on the ground prevents the fire the spreading.
