Fire Update – 6/9/2020: A new fire start was reported on the El Rito Ranger District on the Carson National Forest. The fire, which has been named the Cañada Fire, was reported on June 8, 2020.  Fire personnel are currently fighting the fire, which is burning 9 miles of north of El Rito, N.M. and 11 miles east of Canjilon, N.M. The fire is burning dead and down logs, ponderosa pine and dry mixed conifer at elevations of up to 9000 feet.

Winds, although not producing the predicted wind gusts, are making suppression efforts difficult. Crews are taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity to suppress the fire directly. Minimal growth is expected over the next operational shift. Crews are making progress, as the fire is 25% contained. Preventing the spread of COVID-19 among our first responders and communities is an important addition to the Carson National Forest’s focus on safety this year. To keep firefighters and communities healthy and safe, follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce the spread of illness. Please stay clear of the fire area to help firefighters safely perform their job in protecting our natural resources.

Smoke may be visible in the surrounding communities, Taos and Española. More information will be released as it becomes available.

Please visit the New Mexico Department of Health’s smoke page for information on protecting your health during fires and on smoky days: https://nmtracking.org/fire.

The Carson National Forest would like to remind all visitors of the fire restrictions (Stage 2) still in place. Igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire is prohibited.
