Current Situation: Winter storm conditions, that brought snow to the area, have moved to the east bringing a warming and drying weather pattern for the next 5-7 days. Snowfall over the fire area ranged from 7 inches at lower elevations to as much as 24 inches at higher elevations.

As the weather clears, it will allow for an infrared flight over the fire to detect hot spots. The infrared equipment can detect a 12-inch hot spot at 500 degrees at an elevation of 12,000 feet. If there are hot spots underneath the snow the infrared flight will detect them. Last night, there was too much cloud cover for an infrared flight, one will be scheduled for tonight. Today, fire managers will try to access the fire area, to look at conditions and determine future containment actions.

Weather: The storm system, that produced the winter event, moved into Texas overnight bringing clear skies to the fire area this morning. Temperatures today will rise into the upper 30’s to low 40’s with moderate west to northwest winds. A warming trend will continue through the weekend with lower daytime humidity. Overnight lows will continue to fall below freezing.

Fire Restrictions: Stage 1 Fire Restrictions remain in effect on the Carson National Forest, for more information visit www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/carson/alerts-notices.

Road Closures/Evacuation Order: All road closures and roadblocks have been lifted on County and State Roads. The voluntary evacuation for Luna Canyon was also lifted.

Fire Closures: The Carson National Forest issued a temporary closure (Forest Order 02-484) prohibiting the public from entering the area around the Luna Fire. This closure includes access for hunting. For more information on the fire closure visit www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/carson/alerts-notices. A Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire remains.

Safety Message: In many areas, roads will continue to be icy. If you have to drive, please slow down and be aware of changing conditions. For New Mexico road information dial 511.
