Daily Update: June 2, 2026
Acres: 31,770 Start Date: May 14, 2026
Location: Capitan Mountain Wilderness Cause: Human caused
Personnel: 650 personnel Containment: 61% Contained
Fuels: Heavy dead fuels in the Peppin burn scar
Highlights: Strategic firing operations successfully reduced uncontrolled fire’s edge bringing fire out of steep, dangerous terrain and down to a preplanned control line, increasing containment.
Operations: Firefighters burned out a small, well-prepared section on the south side of the fire. Prior to Monday’s operation this section of fire was in jagged, rugged terrain and risky to firefighters and the public. As a result of the operation, that section is more easily defended with a more defined edge on more safely accessible land which can effectively and safely be patrolled and contained. In addition, resources from this fire assisted the Arabella Volunteer Fire Department with a lightning-caused fire in Arabella. That fire has been held to 1/10 acre. Today’s predicted weather was part of the burnout plan since higher humidity, reduced solar heating, lower temperatures, and precipitation will all subdue fire activity. Crews will focus on securing containment lines and continuing suppression repair. Initial attack crews will be prepared for any lightning or other starts in the area.
Weather: Tonight and Wednesday night have the highest forecast rainfall and scattered thunderstorms over the next week. Prevailing winds will be mild but gusty. Localized winds, including outgusts, may reach 30 mph. High relative humidity, lower temperatures and less solar radiation will all reduce fire activity. Lightning is expected to accompany this storm, so initial attack teams will be ready to investigate lightning strikes and suppress any fires they start.
Smoke: Weather patterns over the next few days should reduce smoke effects from the fire. Any impacts from the smoke should remain within the immediate vicinity of the fire. For air quality information, please check local conditions at Fire.AirNow.gov.
Closures and Warnings: A forest closure is in effect across the Capitan Mountain area, extending east and south of Highway 246 to the Forest Service boundary and continuing south to Forest Service Road 57. Baca campground is included in the closure. Stage 1 fire restrictions also remain in effect. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire to ensure safe access for firefighting aircraft. If a drone enters the restricted airspace, all firefighting aircraft must be grounded to ensure safety. Remember “If You Fly, We Can’t.”

Evacuations: Evacuation statuses continue to be evaluated daily. The SET status remains in place, including the Lone Tree Ranch area down to Padilla Ranch, extending east to Forest Road 57 and the Forest boundary. The SET status for State Highway 246 from mile marker 13 to the ridgeline of the Capitan Mountains near Boy Scout Mountain remains in place.
Residents in all SET areas should stay alert to changing conditions and be prepared to leave if necessary. For more information or to sign up for alerts, visit

Safety: With the incoming thunderstorms, flash flooding is possible in low-lying areas. Stay informed about any potential flooding risks in your area. Abide by any evacuation orders. When driving remember emergency equipment may be responding and out on the road. Around the fire area, crews, heavy equipment, and machinery remain active in and around the incident. The safety of firefighters and the public is our highest priority, and we ask everyone to stay aware of ongoing operations. Fire personnel will continue working along area road systems, and increased caution from the public helps keep both firefighters and community members safe.
