Sharp Change in the Weather Assists Firefighters on the Seven Cabins Fire

Daily Update: June 3, 2026

Acres: 31,770                                                                                    Start Date: May 14, 2026

Location: Capitan Mountain Wilderness                                          Cause: Human caused

Personnel: 583 personnel

Fuels: Heavy dead fuels in the Peppin burn scar

Containment: 61% Contained

Highlights: Patrols on Tuesday showed that the new line from Monday’s burning operation is secure. Some white smoke can be observed from burning dead and down timber from the 2022 Peppin fire.

Operations: Today, crews will continue patrolling lines around the fire. The change in weather has produced an environment less advantageous to fire spread. A primary consideration when determining strategies for firefighting are “values at risk.” These include both public and private properties that might be damaged or destroyed by the fire if not attended. Structure protection groups are often dispatched to set up defenses around structures that may be in the path of the fire. One of the many values at risk on this fire is the Lone Tree Bible Ranch. Crews have used existing roads, handline, sprinklers and vegetation removal to protect the property. Handline produces a continuous break in fuels used to control the advance of a fire. As its name implies, the process involves digging by hand down to mineral soil. It is slower and more labor-intensive than dozer line, but can be used in many places dozers can’t go.

Weather: Showers or thunderstorms are forecast throughout the day. Relative humidity will remain high, temperatures low, and solar shading high. Prevailing winds will be mild but around thunderstorms wind becomes unpredictable. Both direction and speed of wind can vary quickly. As always, our initial attack teams will be prepared to work side by side with local firefighters to locate and suppress any fires, lightning-caused or other, that occur in the area.

Smoke: Weather patterns over the next few days should reduce smoke effects from the fire. Any impacts from the smoke should remain within the immediate vicinity of the fire. For air quality information, please check local conditions at Fire.AirNow.gov.

Closures and Warnings: A forest closure is in effect across the Capitan Mountain area, extending east and south of Highway 246 to the Forest Service boundary and continuing south to Forest Service Road 57. Baca campground is included in the closure. Stage 1 fire restrictions also remain in effect. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire to ensure safe access for firefighting aircraft. If a drone enters the restricted airspace, all firefighting aircraft must be grounded to ensure safety. Remember “If You Fly, We Can’t.”

Fire Restrictions: (https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/lincoln/alerts/order-03-08-26-001-stage-1-fire-restrictions)

Evacuations: Evacuation statuses continue to be evaluated daily. The SET status remains in place, including the Lone Tree Ranch area down to Padilla Ranch, extending east to Forest Road 57 and the Forest boundary. The SET status for State Highway 246 from mile marker 13 to the ridgeline of the Capitan Mountains near Boy Scout Mountain remains in place.

Residents in all SET areas should stay alert to changing conditions and be prepared to leave if necessary. For more information or to sign up for alerts, visit

Safety: The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the area from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. today. These are subject to change, so stay informed and abide by evacuation orders. When driving remember emergency equipment may be responding and out on the road. Around the fire area, crews, heavy equipment, and machinery remain active in and around the incident. The safety of firefighters and the public is our highest priority, and we ask everyone to stay aware of ongoing operations. Fire personnel will continue working along area road systems, and increased caution from the public helps keep both firefighters and community members safe.
