Santa Fe National Forest reminds visitors to recreate responsibly this Fourth of July

Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Santa Fe National Forest encourages visitors to recreate responsibly, obey fire restrictions and closures, and do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires.

As visitors celebrate the Fourth of July, remember that fireworks are prohibited year-round on all National Forest System lands. Fireworks, including sparklers, firecrackers, aerial fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices, can easily ignite dry grass and forest fuels, causing fast-moving wildfires.

Stage II Fire Restrictions remain in effect across the Santa Fe National Forest. These restrictions reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires while allowing for the continued enjoyment of public lands.

Fire restriction decisions are based on current and forecasted weather, fuel conditions, expected fire behavior and available firefighting resources. These measures are intended to reduce wildfire risk while balancing public access with the safety of residents, visitors, firefighters and surrounding communities. Forest closures are considered when conditions indicate restrictions alone are no longer sufficient to protect public safety and natural resources.

Current conditions indicate that fire restrictions, combined with public cooperation, active enforcement, and a strong initial attack capability, continue to be effective. Since the beginning of the year, the Santa Fe National Forest has responded to 12 human-caused fires totaling 29 acres, 15 natural-caused fires totaling 183 acres, and 3 with unknown causes totaling 716 acres. Over June 27 and 28 alone, firefighters successfully contained multiple new fire starts despite Red Flag Warning conditions. Firefighters across the Southwest remain well-positioned to respond to new incidents.

Visitors can help keep public lands open by taking responsibility for preventing human-caused fires. Before heading out, visitors should check for current fire restrictions, closures and conditions, and have a backup destination in case plans need to change.
