Happy Fourth of July! As firefighters work to build on recent progress,

the public can help by preventing new wildfire starts over the holiday weekend.

As we celebrate Independence Day, the Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team wishes everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July. While the team remains available to assist with any new wildfire starts in the area, responding to additional incidents may require firefighters, engines and equipment to be reassigned from the Beehive Fire, potentially slowing progress toward increased containment. Please be fire safe this holiday weekend.

Operational Highlights: Firefighters continue making steady progress on the Beehive Fire and fire managers anticipate significant gains in containment over the next several days as crews complete mop-up operations and secure the remaining portions of the perimeter. Mop-up involves extinguishing any remaining hotspots near the fire’s edge to prevent the fire from spreading beyond established containment lines. Several more days are expected before containment objectives are fully met. Firefighters remain optimistic about increasing containment in the days ahead.

The fire is currently estimated at 4,554 acres. The increase in acreage is the result of updated mapping after an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS/drone) detected a previously unidentified area that had already burned within the fire perimeter. Residents and visitors may continue to see smoke from these interior areas as fuels burn and crews complete planned firing and mop-up operations. Suppression activities are beginning to wrap up on the head of the fire, while suppression repair efforts are underway along the southern perimeter. Fire line construction is nearly complete, and crews are transitioning from building and holding containment lines to securing and rehabilitating areas affected by firefighting operations. On the southern perimeter, firefighters are in the early stages of restoring areas disturbed during suppression efforts, including dozer lines, fire breaks, staging areas and temporary roads. Suppression repair is an important part of wildfire response and helps reduce erosion, protect water quality, minimize impacts to wildlife habitat and prevent the spread of invasive species.

Smoke: For current smoke conditions, view the interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/.  Learn more about protecting yourself from wildfire smoke and its health impacts at https://nmtracking.org/environment/air/FireAndSmoke.html.

Weather & Fire Behavior: Warm, very dry conditions and breezy winds today will support active burning, especially within unburned pockets of fuel inside the fire perimeter. A shift in the southeast wind tonight will bring a slight increase in humidity, helping to moderate fire activity overnight. On Sunday and Monday, isolated high-based showers and dry thunderstorms could produce gusty, erratic winds and increase the potential for sudden changes in fire behavior and new lightning-caused fire starts.

Fire Restrictions & Closures: A Beehive Fire road closure is in effect. The closure includes Forest Service Roads 83, 421, 576 and 133, from Highway 64 to its intersection with Forest Service Road 133E1. Closure information can be found at: https://bit.ly/Beehive-Fire-Road-Closures. The Carson National Forest is currently in Stage 2 fire restrictions.
