Final Update: Southwest Area Incident Management Team 4 will transfer command of the Frijoles Fire to the type 4 organizational team for the Santa Fe National Forest on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Ongoing & Planned Operations: Mitigation and repair operations are ongoing along with continued suppression tactics.
The type 4 organizational team for the Santa Fe National Forest will take command of the Frijoles Fire beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 6:00pm. With the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team in place, assessment of fire effects will continue under the management of the local forest unit. The “Fire Information” phone line will continue to be operational, however, the “Media Information” phone line will be discontinued as of September 8, 2026, at 6:00pm. If there are any questions about the Frijoles Fire, please contact the local Forest Service unit via the Fire Information line noted above.
Air Quality & Smoke: Smoke from the eastern flank of the fire will be noticeable again today with active surface fire behavior. Approximately 30 acres burned yesterday and this can be expected again today. Mora, Nambe, Espanola, and Santa Fe should all see good air quality all day. The Frijoles River Valley east of Chimayo may have a period of moderate in the evening but will have an average of good for the day. Smoke may also settle east of the fire at the base of the Sangre de Christos mountains. The highest amounts of smoke will stay in the wilderness area and mountains to the east of the fire. Weather: Isolated showers and thunderstorms after noon are expected today. Sunny with a high near 87 with a north wind of 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation for the day is at 20%.
Evacuations & Closures: No evacuations are in place in Santa Fe or Rio Arriba counties for the Frijoles Fire. Residents should remain prepared and continue monitoring official updates, as the fire remains active and conditions may change. A temporary forest area closure remains in effect on the Santa Fe National Forest, including the Pecos Wilderness area in the Espanola Ranger District. Additionally, there is a Temporary Road Closure Order affecting FR 306, from the intersection of FR 440 and FR 306, west to the Forest Boundary and FR 306.
