Santa Fe, N.M., September 21, 2026 – The Frijoles Fire is currently 15,956 acres and 78% contained, with 47 personnel assigned. When weather conditions allow, an infrared (IR) flight will help crews find areas of remaining heat and update acreage and containment information.
Firefighters made progress on the Frijoles Fire suppression repair over the weekend as conditions allowed, but muddy roads and afternoon thunderstorms continue to affect access and operations. Much of the fire is accessed by UTV, making travel into and out of remote areas time-consuming under current conditions. Crews will continue assessing road and terrain conditions each day and will conduct suppression repair where it can be done safely.
Frijoles Fire Recovery Open House: Community members are invited to a Recovery Open House on Thursday, September 24, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Chimayo Elementary School. There will be no formal presentation. Stop by anytime during the open house to speak one-on-one with agency representatives, ask questions and learn about post-fire recovery and available resources.
Weather, Smoke & Safety: Sunny conditions are expected Monday, with chances for thunderstorms increasing Tuesday evening and continuing through the week. Rain and higher humidity have reduced fire activity, though isolated heat may continue to smolder and produce visible smoke as conditions dry. Saturated soils and more storms may increase flash flood and debris-flow risk in and downstream of burned areas. Avoid arroyos, stream beds, and low-lying areas during storms.
The next Frijoles Fire update will be Wednesday, September 23, 2026, unless there are significant changes.
