Santa Fe, N.M., September 30, 2026: The Frijoles Fire is 15,956 acres and 90% contained.
An infrared flight is planned which will help crews assess the remaining fire area, identify any remaining heat, and confirm additional containment. Overnight cloud cover has prevented the flight from taking place.
Over the past several days, hotshot crews have repaired fences and bucked cut trees, while heavy equipment operators have repaired damaged Forest roads. Crews also cleared culverts and restored drainage features so water can move through the area as intended, reducing the potential for road damage and erosion during future storms. Crews are now hauling equipment out of the fire area. Final road repairs will begin once the necessary rock material is delivered. District crews will complete the remaining work with support from Forest Service road engineers.
Frijoles Fire Recovery Open House: The open house scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, has been rescheduled again due to rainfall, the flash flood watch and ongoing flood response. The new date is Thursday, October 1, 5:30-7:30 pm at the Chimayo Elementary School Gym, 37 County Road 93, Chimayo. The open house will give community members an opportunity to speak directly with state, local and federal representatives about post-fire conditions, recovery resources and next steps.
Safety: Please allow muddy Forest roads to dry before traveling on them. Driving on saturated roads can create deep ruts, damage road surfaces and make repairs more difficult.
This will be the final regular Frijoles Fire update. An additional update will be issued when the fire reaches 100% containment.
