Location: Approximately 2 miles southwest of Cloudcroft, NM, on the west side of Sunspot Highway.
Lat/Long: 32 deg, 55 min, 40.3 sec X 105 deg, 45 min, 55.45 sec

Firefighting Resources: One Forest Service engine responded (5 firefighters).

Hazards: Snags, rugged terrain
Size: less than 0.1 acre

Cause: Lightning
Status: This fire was reported around mid-morning on Tuesday (8/9/16). Forest Service firefighters responded to the fire, which they discovered to be a single tree that had been struck by lightning. The fire spread to less than 0.1 acre through grass and duff in ponderosa pine understory. Firefighters secured the perimeter and then retreated from the scene due to approaching rain showers that were accompanied by lightning. They will return to the scene to re-assess the conditions when it is safe to do so.
