Hondito Wildfire Community Meeting Planned

Taos, NM, May 19, 2017—For Immediate Release.  Fire managers on the Carson National Forest are inviting the public to a community meeting 10 am Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Tres Piedras Ranger Station located at 22280 US Highway 64, Tres Piedras 87577.  The meeting will discuss the Hondito Wildfire and answer questions about planned operations.

The wildfire showed minimal growth on the east and west flanks and is now 18 acres.  Fire crews continue to monitor the wildfire as it continues to burn in larger dead and down fuels.

Resource objectives for the Hondito Wildfire include community protection, reducing ground/ladder fuels, improving wildlife habitat, promoting grass cover, and improving forest structure.  The wildfire will also be utilized to lower the risk of future high severity fires.

Although the wildfire is producing minimal smoke, people with respiratory problems and smoke-sensitive individuals are encouraged to take precautionary measures.  Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website at https://nmtracking.org/fire.
