Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands – Deep Fire on the Magdalena Ranger District – 7/28/2018

MAGDALENA, NM, July 28, 2018 – The Deep Fire, located in the San Mateo Mountains on the Magdalena Ranger District, was first reported on Friday, July 27, 2018. The lightning caused fire is located in steep, rugged terrain between Deep Canyon and Cold Springs Canyon, approximately 1 mile east of the Apache Kid Wilderness and 2 miles from the Cold Springs trail head.

The Deep Fire is estimated at 10 acres in size, burning in Ponderosa pine, pinon juniper and grass, with minimal fire activity observed today. Due to the hazardous terrain and the weather forecast for thunderstorms developing over the area later today, firefighters will monitor and patrol the fire as necessary. Smoke may be visible from NM State Highway 107.

Thunderstorm activity is forecast for the next several days with higher humidity and precipitation forecasted. The Magdalena Ranger District lifted all fire restrictions on the District, Friday, July 13, 2018. For more fire restriction information please visit: http://firerestrictions.us/nm
