Gila National Forest – Quemado RD continues prescribed burning on Slaughter Mesa

The Quemado Ranger District, Gila National Forest, is looking to burn in the area of Dead Horse Canyon on Slaughter Mesa. This area is located approximately 15 miles southeast of Quemado near Mangas Valley.  This burn should be approximately 160 acres.

Prescribed fires only take place as long as weather, fuel conditions, and smoke dispersal remains favorable. We live in a fire dependent ecosystem, which means that when we control when and where fires are ignited, we reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires. Prescribed fires reduce the current fuel loading, remove ladder fuels, and minimize fire behavior if wildfires start in areas where prescribed burning has been completed.

For more information on this prescribed burn, you may call Quemado RD at 575-773-4678. SM Unit1 Deadhorse
