Gila NF:Quemado Ranger District continuing prescribed burn operations near Armijo Springs

Quemado, NM, November 30, 2018—The Quemado Ranger District, Gila National Forest, plans to continue prescribed burning operations as conditions allow beginning the week of December 3.

The area targeted for pile burning is west of the Armijo Springs Campground, located in Township 2 South Range 17 West Section 26.  Approximately 18 mechanical piles remain with in this area. Depending on weather conditions and ventilation categories ignitions are expected to be completed in 1-2 operational periods.

Projected moisture may result in ideal conditions for pile burning.  The grass surrounding the piles has greened up which limits fire spread away from the piles. No road or area closures are in place.  Smoke may be visible from NM Hwy 32 during ignition operations and the piles take several days to fully be consumed. Information on air quality and protecting your health using the 5-3-1 visibility method can be found at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website https://nmtracking.org/fire or by calling 1-888-878-8992. Fire information can be found at nmfireinfo.com.
