Gila National Forest: Alum Fire

The Alum Fire, which is located on National Forest System lands, within the boundaries of the Gila Wilderness, is south of the Grapevine Campground and west of NM Hwy 15. This is approximately 5-10 acres, probably human-caused. Silver City Hotshots and Type 2helicopter have been ordered and will arrive in the a.m. An initial attack crew and engines responded today at about 4:30 p.m.

Fire crews will respond on horseback in the morning to do another assessment of the actual size of the fire. The management strategy for this fire is full-suppression. The fire is burning in the riparian area of the Gila River, burning in cottonwood, ponderosa pine, and juniper.

Smoke impacts are expected to be minimal.
