Blue Mountain Fire – Magdalena Ranger District, Cibola NF – 8/27/2019

Magdalena, NM; August 27, 2019 – For Immediate Release.  The Blue Mountain Fire, located approximately 3 ½ miles northwest of Blue Mountain in the San Mateo Mountains, on the Magdalena Ranger District, is a lightning caused fire that began Sunday, August 25, 2019 and has increased to 42 acres in size.  A course of action is currently being determined for managing the fire. The fire is currently burning in inaccessible terrain with limited access.

The fire is burning in Ponderosa Pine, grass, and brush.  It is currently burning at a minimal intensity, creeping and backing down ridge lines. The weather forecast predicts daily chances for thunderstorms for the next 3 to 5 days.

Currently, there are no road advisories or trail closures in place.  With the Labor Day weekend approaching and hunting season beginning on the Magdalena Ranger District, the general public is being advised to use caution when driving roads and using trails in the proximity of the fire. Smoke may be visible from New Mexico State Highway 52.
