Dark Canyon Fire Maps

Fire Update: The Dark Canyon Fire remains within the Suppression Strategy Area and is currently north of Tucson Mountain, east of Lake Mountain and South of Forest Service Road 9743. As anticipated by fire managers, hotter, dryer days this week have increased fire behavior. The fire moved north from Carrizo Cone, south into Blanchard Canyon and west towards Lake Mountain. The lack of strong winds means the fire is being driven by fuels and topography. On the west side of the fire, crews continue prepping fire lines near Blanchard Canyon, along Road 84 and around a section of private land in anticipation of firing operations later today and tomorrow. On the southeast side of the fire, bulldozer lines were constructed yesterday from Tucson Mountain eastward. Crews anticipate conducting firing operations in the vicinity of Forest Service Rd 9732 connecting to Forest Service Rd 9745, west of the Lacey Ranch area. Fire activity will peak in the afternoon. Expect smoke output to be at their heaviest and most visible between 2 pm – 6 pm. Coordination on fire tactics continues between the Forest Service, adjacent landowners and the state.

Firefighting Resources: 3 Engines, 2 Type-2 Initial Attack Crews, 1 Type-1 Crew, 2 bulldozers, 1 Medic Team, 2 Resource Advisors, plus support personnel.

Smoke: Smoke will be visible from Capitan, Devil’s Canyon, Highway 380, and Highway 246. It will slowly drift to the northeast towards Roswell, Ramon, and Vaughn. Please visit the NM Department of Health’s smoke page at https://nmtracking.org/fire for information on protecting your health on smoky days.

Weather: Weather is a large contributing factor to wildfire spread. Temperatures today will be in the upper 80s with a 10-20% chance of rain. Humidity levels will be in low 20s and winds approximately 5-10 mph.

More Info: Fire updates will occur every other day until no longer needed.
