UPDATE – Cibola NF & National Grasslands – Magdaelna Ranger District- Hop/Patterson Canyon Prescribed Fire will be implemented when conditons are favorable

Magdalena, NM, January 29, 2019 – Fire Managers at Cibola National Forest will execute several prescribed fires on the Magdalena Ranger District this winter.  These planned ignitions are conducted under specific conditions to restore fire dependent ecosystems.  They promote forest health in many ways by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients, and increasing habitat diversity.  They are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

The Hop/Patterson Canyon Burn will begin as soon as conditions are favorable. Isolated debris piles will be ignited throughout the project area, located approximately two miles east of Magdalena, NM. Smoke will be visible for several days after ignitions have been completed. Up to 40 acres will be treated to promote forest health and protect nearby communities. The fire area and adjacent roads and trails will be monitored until all hazards are mitigated.

Smoke will be monitored to assess potential health impacts and the Forest Service will coordinate with the New Mexico Environment Department and Department of Health to issue any needed alerts. Smoke sensitive individuals are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found on the New Mexico Department of Health website at https://nmtracking.org/fire
