Lincoln National Forest – Lewis Prescribed Burn 4/12/2019

The Lincoln National Forest, Sacramento Ranger District will continue with ignition on the Lewis Prescribed fire today. The prescribed burn is located near the towns of Weed and Sacramento, NM.

Smoke may impact various roads in the area and may be visible from the communities of Weed, Mayhill, Sacramento and Cloudcroft NM. The public is advised to use caution when traveling through the area.

Prescribed fire is always managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority and is one of the most effective tools available to resource managers. Prescribed fires mimic natural fires by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increasing habitat diversity. They are designed to meet specific objectives, including providing community protection and promoting forest health.

The primary objective of this burn is to reduce the amount of dead and downed fuel material on the forest floor after previous Pinion/Juniper grassland restoration treatments.
