Cibola NF & National Grasslands – Magdalena Ranger District Postpone Baney Prescribed Burn

MAGDALENA, NM, May 19, 2019– Fire managers from Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands are postponing the Baney prescribed burn on the Magdalena Ranger District originally planned for this week, due to forecasted winds over the burn perimeter later today through the first of the week.

Fire managers will look to reschedule the 5,000 acre Baney Burn for the end of the week.  Burning conditions on the ground, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather are forecast to be more favorable.  The Baney Prescribed Burn is located in the San Mateo Mountains, approximately 50 miles southwest of Magdalena, NM.

Prescribed fires are the most effective tool available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems.  The burn will help to reduce forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increase habitat diversity. Prescribed burns are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.
