Fuel Type: Grass, Pinyon-Juniper, Mix Conifer

Values at Risk: Radio Towers, Cabins, 15 Structures in the Arabela area.

Fire Activity and Weather: Due to lower humidity, higher winds and temperatures, the northwest portion of the fire was very active. Heat of the day and gusty winds resulted in active fire behavior in the north, east and southern areas of the fire. Fire movement was seen in Peach Canyon with some fire spread over Seven Cabins Road. Thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning are predicted for the next few days. This pattern could create erratic fire behavior. In the morning briefing, firefighters were made aware of weather and fire behavior expected for the day.

Operations: The Pine Lodge Fire is staffing both day and night shifts of firefighters to continue and hold the movement of the fire. Dozer lines are being created to help stop further progression. Firefighters are conducting burn out operations as needed, improving control lines, and continuing protection of identified values. Many of the crews are being “spiked” (camped) out closer to the fire area. Citizens should expect increased fire traffic in the Arabela area as a new camp is being established.

Smoke: Expect some smoke to settle in the lower areas at night and in the early morning due to an occurrence known as a temperature inversion. Trapped smoke generally lifts after the sun rises and temperatures rise For additional information go to NM Fire Information https://nmfireinfo.com/smokemanagement/.

Air Support: Air tanker efforts were hampered due to smoke and lack of visibility. Helicopters were able to conduct bucket operations, on the southeastern part of the fire.

Road Closures: NM State Road 246 from Capitan to Roswell continues to be closed (local access only). For status on road closures, citizens are encouraged to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department at 575-648-2341.

Lincoln National Forest Closure: Highway 246 is closed from Capitan to Roswell. Local residents will be allowed to access their home or property. An area closure is in place for Capitan Mountains east of Capitan Gap Road until further notice. All trail systems and Forest Service roads within the closure area are closed to public use.
