Fire Update: Firefighters continued their efforts overnight to contain a lightning-caused fire burning in the vicinity of Scott Abel Canyon. The 8-acre Abel Fire is now 10 percent contained. The fire is burning in a mixture of grass, juniper, pine, and heavy dead and down fuel. The current spread is low through grass with some isolated torching of trees.
This is a full-suppression fire, which means that crews will work to contain the fire as quickly as possible where and when it is safe to do so. Fire crews have constructed a combination of direct and indirect control lines around 75 percent of the fire. Direct control lines can be established close to the fire perimeter in favorable topography. Indirect control lines are used when terrain is steep and the risk of rolling debris and hazard trees can cause safety concerns for firefighters. Today, crews are also working to remove snagged trees and form trenches to limit the possibility of fire spread from rolling material down the steep slopes on the north and west side of the fire. The Forest Service asks that the public avoid recreating in this area until further notice.
