Fire Update. 6/22/2019 at 8 pm: Today winds from the east produced an increase in fire activity on the western flank of the fire. Originally crews had hoped to catch the fire at Copland Canyon, however fire crossed that canyon, and fire crews are now working from the Seven Cabins Road to create a fuel break. The increased fire activity produced a large smoke column that could be seen from surrounding communities.
Fire crews continued to build fire line along Road 567C on the east side of the fire. Crews scouted and assessed structures in and around the town of Arabella. The fire is about 3-5 miles northwest of Arabella, therefore crews looked for line construction opportunities along the forest boundary. Dozer line and hand crew work along Highway 246 has kept the fire from crossing the road. Milder winds allowed fire crews were able to utilize air operations, including retardant drops, the entire day.
Safety of firefighters and the public, continues to be of utmost importance.
Weather: Temperatures today dropped slightly, although it is still considered to be critical fire weather.
Firefighting Resources: Resources are continuing to arrive. A total of 234 resources are committed to the incident. The Southwest Area Incident Management, Team 5, has arrived and is transitioning with the Pecos Team. They are expected to transition at 6:00am, Sunday, June 23.
Closures: The fire has not crossed Highway 246, but because of smoke impacts, it is closed from Capitan to Roswell. Local homeowners will be allowed access. The Smokey Bear Ranger District issued an area closure for the Capitan Mountains east of Capitan Gap. West Mountain will remain open for recreational use. They remind visitors to be careful with campfires across all areas of the forest.
